President Akufo-Addo says Ghana is determined to maintain the integrity of its democratic institutions.
He is convinced the strengthening of such vital organs of state will deepen democracy, encourage free speech, promote transparency and accountability.
Receiving the letter of credence from the United Kingdom High Commissioner to Ghana, the President said the situation in Guinea is a concern to the regional bloc, assuring everything is being done to ensure normalcy.
Members’ states of the Economic Community of West African States will hold a virtual summit to decide the best response to the political unrest in Guinea.
It follows Sunday’s coup in Guinea, which saw the arrest and detention of that country’s President, a suspension of its Constitution and a dissolution of its Parliament by the mutineers led by French legionnaire, Colonel Mahady Doumbouya, who was the Commander of the Special Forces wing of that country’s Armed Forces.
The meeting is intended to find a solution to the situation in Guinea. The President believes that the ballot box and not the bullet should be the only legitimate means of effecting change in the political leadership of any country within the sub-region.
As Chairperson of ECOWAS, President Akufo-Addo issued a statement Sunday to unreservedly condemn the coup in Guinea and the subsequent arrest and detention of its President, Alpha Conde.
He also called for his immediate and unconditional release and a call for the restoration of the country’s Constitution, which leaders of the coup spearheaded by Mamady Doumbouya said they had suspended.
As Ghana enjoys political stability, President Akufo Addo said more is needed to maintain the peace.
"It is important for the stability of our nation, it is important for the freedom of the people, and it’s important for the good governance of our country and as chairman of ECOWAS, I know we have to work to find a solution to the crisis in Guinea," he said.
