The deceased, Ibrahim Kaaka Mohammed

The mother of Ibrahim Anyass Mohammed aka Maacho Kaaka has petitioned the Director of the Police Intelligence and Police Professional Standards (PIPS) Bureau.

She wants PIPS to initiate an inquiry into allegations of professional misconduct made against the Ejura Police.

The petition which was submitted yesterday is in relation to the allegations made public by the report of the Ministerial Committee set up to investigate the Ejura killings.

According to the report, one Aminu Mohammed alleged that the Ejura Police demanded and obtained a bribe in order to release from custody an individual against whom a criminal complaint had been made.

In a press statement to announce the submission of the petition, the family spokesperson, Nafiu Mohammed stated that “the allegations of corruption in the view of the mother of Kaaka, raise critical questions about the integrity of the Ghana Police Service.”

He explained that the family hopes that the petition brought before the PIPS will see to the appropriate criminal and administrative sanctions being applied against the Ejura Police.

The Inspector-General of Police, Attorney General, and the Minister for Interior were copied in the letter.

Background

Kaaka was killed at Ejura in the Ashanti Region on June 26 in what many have attributed to his social activism and affiliation to the #FixTheCountry movement.

Police say unknown assailant(s) attacked his occipital area with clubs as the deceased entered his Dagomba Line family house.

His murder sparked widespread agitations and protests, which saw the killing of two more indigenes during a confrontation with a joint police and military team amid the firing of gunshots.

Nearly a month after a Commission of Inquiry submitted its findings into the circumstances surrounding the duo’s death, the family has stated that their confidence in the Commission has waned since the investigations conducted into the murder have only caused them more pain.

Baba Iddi has been remanded into police custody for the past two months over the accusation.
