The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) is calling for calm among drivers over intentions to increase transport fares.

The drivers are looking to the increment which they believe will help offset the impact suffered by the increment in fuel prices.

The GPRTU is expected to engage the government in negotiations on Tuesday, November 9.

The meeting is expected to see the Union table its concerns with the hopes of having them addressed as far as an upward adjustment is concerned.

Ahead of this meeting, General Secretary of GPRTU, Godfred Abulbira Adogma, explained that "we are cautioning our members to hold on unless the discussion on Tuesday is concluded before we can know the actual line of action."

He told Accra-based Citi FM that the outcome of Tuesday's meeting will determine "whether there will be fare increment or levies will be reduced".

According to Mr Adogma, the meeting will also encompass pleas for scrapping some taxes and levies on petroleum products.

"Practically, we are focusing on whether or not some of the levies on petroleum products can be scraped off, so that is what we intend to achieve this coming Tuesday," he said.

Meanwhile, some Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) have started increasing fuel prices again.

Total has taken the lead, selling a litre of diesel and petrol at ¢6.90 respectively.

The upward adjustment is a result of rising crude oil prices on the international market.
