A coalition of Nation Builders Corps (NABCo) trainees has declared their intention to protest on February 15, over the poor conditions of service.

In an interview with JoyNews, a beneficiary of the employment scheme shared the group's plight, highlighting how life has become unbearable for them.

This, he claimed, is a result of the arrears owned by government since September last year.

He also stated that the NABCo trainees who were paid last week were chosen at random.

“I have worked for six months, and I have not been paid. I depend on my parents for survival, and so as a NABCo trainee, life has been very unbearable for me,” he said.

President Akufo-Addo, in 2018 commissioned the employment scheme, which he stated will bring dignity to jobless graduates by deploying one hundred thousand personnel into seven modules of public service.

However, months after the extension of their service period, trainees say they have been left without pay for close to six months. 

“Are we going to be paid? Because as I speak to you, November validation has not been issued, December has not been issued, and January has also not been issued. And so what indicates that we would be paid?” He quizzed.

The trainees called on government and the Chief Executive of the NABCo Programme to formally issue a communique to address the situation.

“If we have been given an extension, it should be spelt out clearly so we will all be aware that we have been given an extension,” he said.

Meanwhile, Ranking Member on the Employment, Labour and Social Welfare Committee of Parliament, Dr Kwabena Donkor, says the government must honour its obligations to the program's beneficiaries.

He argued that the program has not been well-coordinated.

“The concerns of NABCo trainees have gone to every Ghanaian because this is not the first time they are raising this issue, so I believe almost all Ghanaians are aware of these concerns, particularly concerns of non-payment of their allowances close to seven months,” he stated.
