Ghanaian students from Ukraine, numbering about 26, have arrived safely in Hungary.

According to the President of the Ghana Students Association in Hungary, Dr. Gabriel Asante, who received them, they arrived during the early hours of Sunday, February 27,2022.

"Yesterday, by the close of 2:00 am in the night, I received 26 students who were all Ghanaians. On their way coming, they contacted us, we made arrangements and I dispatched my team members to be at the various train stations in Hungary where the students will arrive," he noted.

The President of the student body added that he and his team proceeded to find temporary accommodation for their counterparts from Ukraine.

He made the comments on the Super Morning Show, on Monday, February 28, 2022.

Giving the gender breakdown of the number of students who arrived, Dr. Asante indicated that "15 are males and 11 females." He said more Ghanaians are expected to seek refuge in Hungary.

"I'm expecting eighty more Ghanaians to come by close of today (Monday, February 28, 2022)," he said.

The well-being of Ghanaians in Ukraine has become of great concern following recent tensions in that country.

Russian President, Vladimir Putin ordered troops to launch attack on two pro-Russian, breakaway regions in eastern Ukraine on Monday.

Speaking on how the trip from Ukraine to Hungary is being coordinated, Dr. Asante said, "the arrangement is that, after we get all of them at a central place, their details will be taken in consultation with my team members and the Honorary Consul and send the details to the Czech Republic. They'll take it from there and start working on their details," he said.

There have been multiple reports of explosions, bombings, and Russian Military vehicles entering Ukraine from various parts of the border with Russia, with a growing number of casualties being counted on both sides.

Ghanaians in Ukraine, particularly students, called on the government of Ghana to come to their aid and possibly evacuate them from the country.

In response to these calls, government, through the Foreign Affairs Ministry expressed concern over the situation and asked them to seek a safe place of abode in the interim while it worked to ensure their safety.

It has also initiated processes aimed at transporting the students to safety.
