A good friend is like a four-leaf clover: hard to find and lucky to have (Irish Proverb). Friendship indeed is a beautiful thing. Not only does it increase one's sense of belonging and purpose, it also boosts one's happiness and reduces stress.
It improves one's self-confidence and self-worth and it can also help one cope with traumas, such as heartbreaks, serious illness, job loss, or the death of a loved one.
As friendship grows, people may develop mutual affection for each other. As a result, people find it difficult to break away, hence, creating a 'best friend' relationship.
When it's a male-male or female-female 'kind of thing', it's not much of a problem. However, when it involves people of the opposite sex, there are issues.
On Friday's edition of the Super Morning Show, the hosts sought the views of listeners on whether they would be comfortable with their partners having a best friend who is of the opposite sex.
While some held the view that there is nothing wrong with that, others thought that it can pose a threat to the marriage or relationship.
The first caller, Naa, said, "sometimes you'll have a cause to worry, but speaking from experience, there is nothing to worry about."
The second caller, Kofi Arhin said, he doesn't see anything wrong with his partner keeping someone of the opposite sex as a 'bestie'. However, the problem is how people maintain that kind of friendship and what parameters they set for that kind of friendship.
Another caller, Rev Harrison was of the view that one's marriage shouldn't scare their friends away. "Nobody can survive alone on this earth with their partners without friends," he said.
Charles said, "it's just like having a relationship with God - He said 'I'm a jealous God.' When you're not married, it's okay to have your best friend being the opposite sex, but immediately you get married, you must understand that your partner is your only best friend,' he said.
"You can still have someone of the opposite sex as your friend, but it shouldn't exceed what you have with your spouse," another caller said.
