A Political Scientist at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), has charged government to review the emoluments of Article 71 office holders.
According to Dr. Amakye Boateng, people who fall within that category do not deserve salaries.
Speaking on JoyNews’ AM Show on Monday, he explained that Parliament must not be made to look financially attractive.
This, he said when done, will free up space for people who believe they have what it takes to help turn the system around.
He added that when Parliament is made less attractive, it would push those ready to make a difference to “also benefit from their hard work not necessarily go and then be taking a large chunk from the loan they bring into the country and the rest of Ghanaians are left to be on their own.”
Commenting on Ghanaians seeking greener pastures outside of the country, Dr Boateng stated that many people have the desire to exit the country at the first opportunity.
He noted that “this situation where a Member of Parliament goes to the United States simply to give birth makes me sick”, adding that such practice is a moral issue and should not be legislated in the country.
He said Members of Parliament only fly out of one county to give birth in another with the goal of enriching themselves as well as repositioning themselves and their children. This, he described as unacceptable.
“But the issue is that who are these people who come for our mandate to lead us? Who are these people? The moment they behave like this then their political purposes come overly exposed. Why did they go into government?” he quizzed.
