The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) is calling for calm between residents of Koblimahgu, a suburb of Tamale and staff of Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo) following a clash between the two parties.
In a statement by the Head of Corporate Communications, Ali Simon Jarana, the Commission assured residents that it is rolling out a stakeholder engagement strategy to find a lasting solution to the long-standing impasse.
The statement added that PURC will next meet with the community opinion leaders and other stakeholders on April 1 to fashion out ways to solve the impasse.
Recently, some residents of Koblimahgu were alleged to have attacked some NEDCo staff, inflicting machete wounds on two of them.
The workers were said to be carrying out their routine work in the area when the incident occurred.
NEDCo subsequently suspended its operations in Tamale in solidarity with its workers, who were assaulted, resulting in a total blackout for some days.
The PURC swiftly intervened, and agreement was made to restore power in Tamale except for Koblimahgu.
A statement by NEDCO said the suspension also hinged on the assurance to arrest and prosecute the perpetrators and the provision of full military cover to the field workers.
According to the PURC, the agreement was for a gradual reconnection plan whilst supporting NEDCo to install the split meters.
