The Education Minister says government will be rolling out a Senior High School (SHS) affiliation programme, which will link new and struggling schools to existing high-performance ones.
Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum said the formal affiliation drive will allow the low-performing institutions to learn about some of the best practices used by their counterparts to enhance study outcomes and results.
Speaking at the 70th Anniversary celebration of the St. Thomas Aquinas Senior High School over the weekend, he was hopeful the initiative would help improve quality education in the second cycle institutions.
“We have begun a process where every new school will be affiliated with existing high performing schools.
"If the school is new before we open, another school will be identified to affiliate with them and support them. For example, we have new schools opening in the Ashanti Region, and we’ve worked with Opoku Ware.
“We know Opoku Ware is a high performing school, and we are affiliating some schools with them so that they can just go there and learn about the best practices of Opoku Ware, instead of staying there for 20 years and that school is not competing,” he noted.
The Bosomtwe MP cited some struggling schools operating under the Catholic Church and pledged to ensure that such institutions are mapped to appropriate counterparts.
He added: “We have to work with you to make sure that affiliation can also work for those schools because we have some high performing schools, and there is no reason we shouldn’t do a formal affiliation so that schools that are struggling will also perform better.”
