President of the Institute of Internal Auditors (IAA) Ghana, Harriet Karikari, has expressed worry about the low remuneration of internal auditors, particularly those in the public sector.
According to her, this is affecting their output.
Speaking to Joy Business, Mrs. Karikari said it is wrong for finance professionals and accountants to be placed ahead of internal auditors in terms of pay, adding, this demotivates most of them.
She tells Joy Business her colleagues must be well remunerated to deliver results for organisations.
“We appear to be second to finance officers and because of that we are not remunerated very well. We have the same qualifications but our colleague finance officers and accountants are paid very well.”
“I think government is coming up with internal audit service to help mitigate some of these problems”, Mrs. Karikari explained.
She further mentioned that “we want management to know that internal auditors are key to organisations”.
The IAA Ghana held its Annual Awareness Creation in May 2022 to inform the general public and corporate Ghana about the importance of internal audit in providing independent assurance that an organisation's risk management, governance and internal control processes are operating effectively.
