The Chairman for Advocates of Christ Ghana, Edem Senanu, says the Chairman of the Constitution and Legal Affairs Committee of Parliament would have to resign should it be discovered he is engaged in some underhand dealings with the UK Parliament concerning the Anti-LGBT+ bill.
According to him, such an action will be an affront to the sovereignty of Ghana and as such would demand that the Chairman relinquishes his post.
His comment was in reaction to an earlier statement by the Chairman of the Legal Affairs Committee, Mr. Anyimadu-Antwi on TV3 when he suggested that he has received an invitation from the UK Parliament to discuss the Anti-LGBT+ bill.
However, in a subsequent interview on JoyFM, he had corrected the earlier statement by stating that the invitation was to join the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association Conference being held in the UK.
He noted that at the meeting, human rights issues will be discussed including Ghana’s Anti-LGBT+ bill.
Reacting to the Chairman’s statement, Edem Senanu, a supporter of the Anti-LGBT+ bill, noted that the separate comments made by the Chairman could suggest something nefarious was going on.
“I am a bit puzzled as to how someone with his rich experience could confuse the invitation by the Commonwealth Parliamentary whatever with an invitation by the UK parliament to come and talk about LGBTQI issues. Is it that there is some correspondence that parliament itself is not aware of and he has that documentation?
“I think it will be too much to assume that someone of his caliber could make that mistake that we have an invitation by the UK parliament to come and talk about the …maybe there’s some other meeting in addition to what is taking place because it just will beat my mind that someone of his caliber will be talking about going to the UK for such a meeting and get his facts wrong.
“And clearly from where we sit that is giving our sovereignty away , to the extent that my colleague from Parliament is saying there is something else perhaps we need to dig a little further. As far as I am concerned, if the Chairman is right that he took off from Ghana because of a UK parliamentary invitation he should resign because that’s not the kind of thing we put him in Parliament for,” he stated.
