Musician Reggie Rockstone says the only time he ever got disrespected as an artist was by his people – Ghanaians.
Affectionately called “Hiplife Grandpapa,” and “Originator of Hiplife,” by some industry players and music fans, some Ghanaians claim he never did anything remarkable for the music industry.
“The only disrespect I ever got was from my own people,” said Reggie Rockstone. “Ghanaians after how many years turned around and said I was nothing… I didn’t do anything,” he told Andy Dosty on Daybreak Hitz.
However, the CEO of Rockz Waakye went on to reveal that he is highly revered by Nigerians.
“Nigerians always showed me respect,” he said on Hitz FM. “In Nigeria, from the airport, I am treated like a king,” he added.
This comes after he was asked whether he felt disrespected by some Ghanaian musicians who were featured in the recently-released Netflix documentary dubbed ‘Afrobeats: The Backstory’.
In the documentary, the musicians claimed Reggie Rockstone started music in 1999. But the ‘Keep Your Eyes on the Road’ rapper burst out into the music scene in 1993.
Be that as it may, Rockstone believes the ‘Afrobeats: The Backstory’ documentary serves as an eye-opener and the foundation for Ghanaians to also tell the story about the origin of their country’s music.
Irrespective of some misleading information highlighted in the documentary, the ‘Ah’ rapper went on to express his gratitude for being mentioned in the project.
The ‘Afrobeats: The Backstory’ documentary talks about the story and the history of the music genre. It debuted on Netflix on June 29.
