The unavailability of adequate classroom structures has compelled Kindergarten pupils of the Apaaso DA Basic School in the Kintampo South District of the Bono East Region to learn under trees.
The school with a population of more than 700 pupils has inadequate furniture and teaching materials, no toilet facilities and no ICT laboratory to aid the study of Information and Communications Technology.
The situation according to some of the pupils who spoke to Joy News is heavily affecting general academic activities of the school as teaching and learning cease each time it rains.
"Our brothers and sisters at the nursery level suffer a lot because, during the rains, they'll be moving their chairs and board to the other classes so they suffer a lot," one of the pupils told Joy News.
Teachers of the school through their collective efforts managed to construct benches without tables to save the children from sitting and writing on the floor.
Though the teachers declined to comment on the issue following a directive from the District Education Directorate, they disclosed to us that teaching and learning size each time it rains.
Deborah Anokyewaa, a resident and a concerned parent who lives close to the school say the situation is affecting academic activities at the school.
"The situation of the school is bad honestly. With its large population, the pupils do not have a sitting place and each time it rains, they have to join their colleagues in the higher classrooms and they are always congested,” she said
Beyond the lack of classroom structures, the school is without adequate furniture, reading materials and an ICT laboratory to aid the study of Information and Communications Technology. Kwabena Godfred, a class four pupil says the situation is affecting teaching and learning.
"We do not have chairs. All our chairs are broken. Our toilet has broken down too and we do not have an ICT lab. So we are appealing to government to help build one for us and supply us with reading materials,” he added.
