The Ghana Bar Association (GBA) President, Yaw Acheampong Boafo, has bemoaned the behaviour of certain lawyers when it comes to the transformation of the profession.
According to him, some legal practitioners have prioritised the interest of their various political parties over that of the Bar.
The situation, he says, has become a detriment to the growth of the Association and the profession as a whole.
He said this on JoyNews’ The Law on Sunday.
“Some of our colleagues have put their political parties membership ahead of that of the Bar. I believe that every lawyer has a party of preference, but we must know that no matter our partisan consideration our fundamental fidelity must be to this greatest profession that has been in existence since time immemorial.
“Unfortunately, some of our colleagues think that their membership of NPP or NDC is far more important than their fidelity to this profession. So they are those who betray us,” he told Samson Lardy Anyenini.
The Association’s President further noted that lawyers who openly declare their political preference make prospective clients who may belong to another party not employ their services.
“Our colleagues must understand that NPP and NDC should be second to the profession because when taking the oath, it was in the name of the profession, not a party,” he noted.
