Three persons have been reported dead at various locations in the Northern Region under bizarre circumstances.
The first is 20-year-old Alhassan Yakubu from Sakogu near Nalerigu in the East Mamprusi District.
The deceased, according to the Northern Regional Police Commander ACP Angwubutoge Awuni, allegedly stole a sheep belonging to one of his neighbours and was asked to appear before the chief of the area for questioning. Unable to stand the embarrassment, he refused to honour the invitation of the traditional ruler and hurriedly drunk some liquid substance suspected to be DDT.
He fell unconscious thereafter and was immediately rushed to the Baptist Medical Centre (BMC) in Nalerigu where he died. An autopsy conducted by Dr. Heel Heweitts revealed that he died as a result of toxic injection.
His body has since been released to the family for burial in accordance with the Islamic tradition.
In another instance, Sulemana Kasim, 32, from Kafaba village, near Salaga in the East Gonja District, shot and killed himself with an unregistered Shot Bar (SB) gun.
According to ACP Awuni, somewhere in May, the deceased went to his farm and saw some cattle grazing there. He immediately fired some shots at the animals at close range, killing one.
He was reported to the Kpembi Wura who after arbitration fined him GH¢1,500. He was given a one-month ultimatum to comply.
After the expiration of the date for payment of the fine, the deceased allegedly shot and killed himself.
The unregistered gun used in the shooting has been retrieved by the police.
The Regional Commander cautioned traditional rulers to desist from sitting on criminal cases to avert unnecessary deaths in the region.
He advised them to encourage their subjects to endeavour to report criminal matters to the police rather than holding themselves up as judges in criminal cases.
Meanwhile, Moari Dokurugu, 41, died on the spot when he was struck by thunder at Nyingare in the East Mamprusi District while untying his goats.
His body has since been buried after an autopsy was performed on it.
