Wholly-owned Ghanaian bank, Unibank Ghana, has refurbished the second floor of the maternity ward of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital to an ultramodern status.

The GH¢2.1 million refurbishment project included complete civil works, remodeling of the whole floor as well as finishing and interior decoration.

New furniture has also been provided  for the consultants, doctors, heads of department, restrooms, reception and waiting areas.

The wards can now boast of 51 new beds and mattresses, an efficient and reliable water system and new dispensary equipments.

New patient panic alert systems, air conditioning of every part of the floor, modern and well-equipped kitchen facilities, refrigerators for offices and medical consumables have also been installed.

Speaking at the event, former Finance Minister and founder of the Hoda Group of Companies, owners of Unibank Ghana, said investment in the Korle Bu maternity ward was a step in the right direction.

"The least we can do for mothers is to make childbirth as simple, painless and pleasurable as possible because without them, nothing meaningful and colourful will get done. A mother's welfare should therefore be made the priority at all times", he said.

Chief Justice, Mrs Georgina Wood, who was the guest of honour at the event held on Wednesday February 25, 2014 commended the bank for the project.

She said: "The nation's wealth rests on the health of the people. The importance of maternal, infant and children health  can't therefore be overemphasised. Maternal and child health must therefore be an important national goal for their health determines their wealth, the well-being the quality of life and happiness of present and future generation".

Head of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, Samuel Amenyi Obed, who spoke on behalf of the CEO of the hospital, Gilbert Buckle, said the refurbishment couldn't have come at a better time.
He tasked other corporate institution to emulate the Unibank's gesture.

"Now the ward has been elevated to the standard, to us it is the best in the country for private and public hospitals. It compares favourably with any ward I have worked in around the world and we are very grateful for that. With this all the inner aspect of the maternity block has been completely transformed. [But] there is still more work to be done in the department".

The refurbishment is part of the Corporate Social Responsibility of Unibank and was spearheaded by wife of Dr Duffuor, Akosua Fosuah Duffuor.
