In his quest to impart knowledge in the arts to younger people, satirist Kwaku Sintim-Misa, aka KSM, has disclosed his intention to establish a school for this purpose.
The 66-year-old comedian and actor told Joy Entertainment’s Kwame Dadzie on Joy Prime TV that the school is the major achievement left for him to accomplish as a creative.
“I don’t see myself as retiring but eventually I would like to have a school, some institution and introduce some of the things that I have grown up learning or knowing [to people]. Let’s teach people. People should know this,” he said.
As someone who received specialized training at the National Film and Television Institute (NAFTI), studied acting and directing at Trinity College in USA, and finally earned a Master of Fine Arts degree in film production from the New York University, KSM is concerned about the state of arts education in Ghana.
He believes that creativity should not only be limited to arts-related courses. He said even medicine requires some creativity.
“I think we mistakenly limit creative arts and talents just to the arts, like ‘I can paint, I can sing’. These are the things that they believe that if you have talent, then it is one of these things. It’s a mistake. I think creativity goes with everything we do; medical, mathematics, and architecture. Everything. You have to be creative
He said the educational system has boxed creativity into just a few things in the arts and so it is not expansive.
His comment is in tandem with criticism of the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education system which does not highlight arts education unlike STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts, and Mathematics).
