The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has arrested eight shop caretakers for issuing unapproved Value Added Tax (VAT) invoices to customers.
The Revenue Mobilization Authority of the GRA is embarking on an enforcement compliance of VAT.
Coordinator for Accra area enforcement, Joseph Annan says the team visited eight shops and picked up eight attendants in the absence of their owners to take their statements at the GRA office.
He said a preemptive assessment will be done and the matter handed over to the Criminal Investigation Department of the Ghana Police Service for further investigation.
Joseph Annan also advised individuals who buy from shops to demand for VAT invoices before they leave the shops because the enforcement team will descend on customers very soon.
We all know it’s the taxes that are used to govern the country so if you go to a shop to buy anything, please ensure to get the VAT invoice before you leave as a patriotic citizen.
We are currently on the Tax payers, very soon we will focus on the customers who fail to demand their tax invoice because that is equally criminal.
Anyone that has registered for VAT is advised to display the certificate in their shops, that is one way a customer will know and demand for the VAT invoice. We have also brought some stickers that can be pasted at the shops to prove that they have the right or mandate to issue the tax to customers, he explained.
