The National Chief Imam, Sheikh Dr Osmanu Nuhu Sharubutu, has prayed that Allah bestows wisdom on the leaders of Bawku in the Upper East Region to ensure that the conflict in the community is resolved amicably.

Speaking at the Eid-al-Adha celebration on June 28, he said the protracted conflict was a major concern since it has the ability to derail the peace the country has enjoyed.

Saying a prayer through his aide, he said “on this special occasion, I commit the whole nation to the care of Allah. Allah has kept order in our country and given us peace.

"We ask him to enhance peace and harmony. The situation in Bawku is of concern to us. We ask Almighty Allah to bring his peace to Bawku.”

He said Ghana is a peaceful country and it was important that citizens continually prayed for peace to prevail in all regions and towns in the country.

The Religious leader also prayed for wisdom for President Akufo-Addo and Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.

“Our nation Ghana, we ask Almighty Allah to keep our country and the two leaders that God has given us, the President and the Vice President intact. We commit them unto the care of Allah. May Allah Grant them his protection,” he added.

The Bawku conflict has been of major security concern for successive governments.

Several stakeholders have called for peace talks and mediation among key players in the conflict.

Amongst them is a group of 11 concerned Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) that called for the conflict in Bawku to be brought to an end.

In a press release issued by the group on Wednesday, March 15, members implored the parties involved in the Bawku conflict—Kusasis and Mamprusis — to bury the hatchet and resort to dialogue to ensure peace.

Additionally, they urged the government to urgently constitute an unbiased mediation panel to assist ongoing efforts to end the protracted violence in Bawku.

“We are deeply concerned about the high probability of the situation degenerating into a violent situation beyond the Bawku area. We are calling on all parties, including the Mamprusis and the Kusasis, to cease fire and resort to dialogue to ensure peace.

“We also call on the government of Ghana to urgently constitute an independent mediation committee to support existing processes to find a lasting resolution to the protracted conflict in Bawku in the Upper East Region”, the statement read.
