The Member of Parliament for Komenda-Edina-Eguafo-Abrem in the Central Region, says it is a disgrace for government to neglect the Komenda Sugar Factory.
Speaking in an interview on JoyNews’ The Pulse on Thursday, Samuel Atta Mills asserted that the government has declined to operationalise the factory because it did not start it.
“It is a disgrace that the NPP government led by President Nana Akufo-Addo neglected this sugar factory, it is all a case of politics .. it is a disgrace to this government and it will always be an albatross on their neck," he said.
According to him, the Komenda Sugar Factory which was dreamt about during Atta Mills’ era would have provided about 7,000 direct and indirect jobs in the community.
He added that due to the unemployment situation, most of the youth have fled the community, turning the town into a ‘ghost town’.
The legislator said if the factory was running, it would have provided sugar that would have cut down the importation of sugar.
“My goodness, do you know the byproducts that this sugar factory can provide for us? It is just sheer wickedness, it is just a case of them [government] not wanting to do anything. They do not care about us.”
He noted that he had followed up on the project several times at the time the former Trades Minister, Alan Kyerematen was in government, all to no avail.
“I went there several times all so that we can find a way so that we could operationalise this and some time ago they brought in this new guy which they knew very well he didn’t have the capacity to operate this sugar factory.
“Now, they’ve brought West African AgroTech who is capable of operationaling this but they need to give him some money – he has done a lot of repairs over there, they need to give him some money but they do not want to give him the money,” he stressed.
