Non-political civic movement, FixTheCountry has reacted to a planned procession by pro-government group, Patriotic Forum For Accountable Governance (PaFFAG) to thank the President.

This follows the revelation by PaFFAG that the procession will start on December 1, 2023, and end on January 5, 2024.

The 36-day event will, however, coincide with a 31-day protest announced last month by Fix The Country.

In an earlier statement, organisers of the Occupy Julorbi House protest had served notice they would embark on a series of demonstrations in December if the current state of affairs does not change.

According to the organisers, protesters will be picketing the Jubilee House, specifically the publicly accessible end facing the Liberation Street.

They noted that the purpose of this particular protest which is on the theme “#OccupyJulorbiHouse" and “#JustResign” will be to demand the resignation of the president or ask for him to be impeached by Parliament.

The organisers further added that the upcoming protest will be to “demand the urgent prosecution of corrupt officials, including persons in the president's family and inner circle who have contributed to what has been described by a former cabinet Minister as “a friends, family and concubines govemment."’

But in a letter addressed to the Ghana Police Service which is circulating on social media and signed by the Bono Regional chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwame Baffoe Abronye, PaFFAG said it also plans to start and end a daily procession between 8 am and 7 pm.

“The purpose of this procession is to express our heartfelt appreciation to President Akufo-Addo for sustaining the nation through the COVID-19 pandemic and setting the nation on a path of economic recovery,” the statement dated October 23 added.

Reacting to this on their X page, #FixTheCountry said "It is for seeking an end to these kinds of zombie and sycophancy driven politics that we #OccupyJulorbiHouse."

The movement also described the development as a "Concert Party!"

Background

From September 21 to 23, an Accra-based civil society group, Democracy Hub organised a demonstration which attracted both local and international attention.

The #OccupyJulorbiHouse protests witnessed the youth of Ghana expressing their displeasure at the hardship, rising cost of living, bad roads, an end to corruption and other issues that they claim make life difficult.
