Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, will be leading the grand launch of the renovation project of the Komfo Anokye teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi on Friday, November 10, 2023.
The “Heal Komfo Anokye Project” seeks to raise US$10 million in a public fundraising drive for the renovation of the 70-year-old in-patient wards at the Hospital.
KATH is the major referral health facility in the Ashanti region, serving the health needs of patients in 12 out of the country’s 16 regions.

Since its construction in 1955 with an original 500-bed capacity, the main wards of the hospital currently accommodate about 1,200 in-patients.

The facility has not been refurbished for many years, with portions of the building developing defects, including the ceilings, tiling and general ward environment.

During a media engagement ahead of the grand launch, the hospital’s CEO, Prof. Dr. Otchere Addai-Mensah, said if the renovation project becomes successful, “any ward at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital should be comparable to any ward in the world.”

The renovation project is expected to be executed as part of the legacy projects marking the 25th anniversary celebration of the Asantehene’s enstoolment next year.
The volunteer group leading the project comprises an architect, real estate developer, marketers, and brands communication experts.

Ashanti regional Head of the Public Works Department, Architect Kwadwo Darko Asante, noted that unlike the abandoned KATH Maternity Block which had to be pulled down, the four A-D ward blocks of the hospital have no structural defects to warrant reconstruction.
Chairman of the “Heal Komfo Anokye Project” team, Samuel Adu-Boakye, expects all Ghanaians home and abroad as well as corporate institutions to commit to making the project a success.

According to him, if one million Ghanaians are to donate at least 10 dollars each, the $10million target can be raised in no time for the project's execution.
