Aiming to bridge the funding gap for women-led small and medium enterprises (SMEs), non-governmental agency, Wombmen Worldwide, is launching an initiative to provide crucial financial support.
The organization, through its Fuelling Hope Project, seeks to empower female entrepreneurs by offering accessible loans to either bolster existing businesses or jumpstart new ventures.
Ghana's ambassador for the NGO emphasized the pressing need for this initiative, pointing out the scarcity of funding avenues available to women entrepreneurs.
Sika Arthur highlighted, "The lack of accessible funding has hindered women from realizing their entrepreneurial potential."
The project's primary objective is to support female entrepreneurs managing micro, small, and medium-sized businesses, offering an alternative investment source to enhance their economic independence and long-term financial stability.
In a recent press gathering, Sika Arthur elaborated on the project's focus, specifically targeting women who face obstacles in initiating businesses due to capital constraints, as well as those with nascent or small-scale enterprises.
Arthur stated, "Our focus is not on businesses that are already self-sustaining and profitable; that would defeat the purpose. We aim to assist those who haven't yet found hope to start their entrepreneurial journey."
Women-owned enterprises make up 44% of all Micro, Small, and Medium-Sized Enterprises (MSMEs) in Ghana and make a substantial contribution to the economy's growth and development.
The significance of women-owned enterprises in Ghana is underscored by the MasterCard Index of Women Entrepreneurs, which placed Ghana (36.5%) among the top three global economies with the highest percentage of women-owned firms, with Uganda (39.6%) and Botswana (38.5%).
