The president of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference, Most Rev. Matthew Kwasi Gyamfi says massive uncontrolled corruption is suffocating the nation.
In a compelling keynote address at the opening ceremony of the 2023 Plenary Assembly, the man of God questioning the effectiveness of Ghana's democratic governance, stated, "It is common knowledge that none of the two major political parties has fared better than the other."
He emphasised the swift accumulation of wealth by politicians and their apparent immunity from prosecution.
Linking corruption to broader national challenges, he said, "The massive uncontrolled corruption is suffocating the nation."
He also posed critical questions about the economy, roads, and financial crisis, alluding to corruption as a major contributing factor.
Connecting corruption to the need for constitutional changes and legal reforms, Most Rev. Gyamfi questioned, "Should the constitution not be changed or bettered for it to work for all Ghanaians instead of for a few?"
He called for a peaceful, democratic amendment to ensure government serves the good of all citizens.
Most Rev. Gyamfi further urged Ghanaian politicians to heed the political changes on the continent, stating, "The Political changes around us on the continent should be a wakeup call for politicians."
He underscored the need for reforms that prioritise the welfare of the people.
