The National Chairman of the University Senior Staff Association says that government has communicated its commitment to paying the lecturers and that this commitment is evident in the three months of arrears that have been paid.
According to Isaac Donkor, the government promised to continue working on the matter during a meeting held yesterday.
He revealed on the AM Show that the government's posture has given the association hope that progress will be made.
"I think we are going to see their actions either today or Monday. I am very positive that they are committed because as I said earlier when we got there, three months have been paid so I know they can do something. I do not think it would get to the end of the month. I do not think so; I am sure by Monday this thing will be a thing of the past.”.
Speaking on JoyNews on Friday, February 2, Mr. Donkor lamented the necessity of commencing a strike action at the start of the year, acknowledging the unfortunate consequences for innocent students.
He disclosed that lecturers, being parents themselves, also have children who are students and require funds to pay their school fees, adding to the urgency of their financial needs.
"As I am talking to you now, we have pensioners who have been on pension for the past three to four years, and their large sums are yet to come because of these activities by the government. Those pensioners have their children in school, and you know the cost of school fees in Ghana.
"Accommodation, the least said, the better. You go to university, and you want to rent, it is almost 10,000 Ghana cedis. So, if the parent does not have money, they cannot even take care of the child. So, we are the ones affected in the society. We are sorry for the children, but very soon the end will come."
The strike, however, continues unabated.
