Energy Minister Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh has come to the defence of the energy sector under the leadership of President Nana Akufo-Addo's New Patriotic Party (NPP) government.
The Manyhia South Member of Parliament asserted that despite the prevailing power crisis, the energy sector is in a much better state than it was under the previous administration led by John Mahama.
In recent weeks, several regions across the country, especially in Greater Accra, have experienced power outages, leading to frustration among citizens towards the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).
These intermittent power cuts have disrupted daily routines for businesses and individuals alike.
Despite calls for ECG to implement a structured load-shedding schedule to aid daily planning, the utility company has denied the existence of an official "dumsor" and rejected the need for a timetable.
Nevertheless, Dr. Opoku Prempeh stressed that the current situation, although challenging, represents an improvement compared to the period when the National Democratic Congress (NDC) was in power.
He claimed that the energy sector under the NPP administration is significantly better, asserting a 300-fold improvement compared to the NDC's four-year term.
Speaking at the inauguration of the NPP campaign team in the Ashanti Region, Dr Opoku Prempeh assured the public that measures are being taken to address the challenges.
He emphasised that enhancing the energy sector is an ongoing process and reiterated his ministry's commitment to ensuring an improvement in the situation.
“If you are comparing four years four years, the NPP administration Energy Sector is 300 times better than that of Mahama.”
He consequently dismissed calls for the implementation of a load-shedding timetable.
“I have promised you that I am going to work on it. It is not a work that is a single event, it is a process and we would continue to work on it for the energy sector to become better.”
“Let those who want the timetable bring it. I don’t know of any timetable because the ECG has said it is not necessary. Why would someone just wish evil for the country?” he asked.
