In a groundbreaking initiative to enhance media coverage of nutrition-related issues across Africa, journalists are set to undergo specialized training organized by Africa Catalyzing Action for Nutrition (AfriCAN) under the theme “Good Nutrition Starts with Me.”
The programme, led by an esteemed trustee and director, Prof. Francis B. Zotor, together with Dr Charity Binka, an astute journalist dedicated to health advocacy, aims to empower media professionals with the tools and knowledge to effectively report on critical nutritional challenges.
The training programme, scheduled to take place in Ho, promises to equip selected journalists in the Volta Region with a comprehensive understanding of nutrition, its impact on public health, and the role the media can play in fostering awareness and policy change. Prof. Zotor, a renowned expert in nutrition and public health, brings a wealth of experience to the initiative, ensuring participants receive top-tier instruction.
"We recognize the pivotal role that journalists play in shaping public perceptions and influencing policy decisions," stated Prof. Zotor. "By providing them with accurate, evidence-based information on nutrition, we aim to catalyze a positive shift in how these issues are covered and addressed in the media."
The training objectives are to equip the media with the knowledge, skills, and resources necessary to advocate for improved nutrition outcomes within their communities. It is also to foster partnerships between AfriCAN and Youth/Media Networks for sustainable nutrition initiatives.
Partnering with Prof. Zotor is Dr Charity Binka, a stalwart in health journalism and founder of the African Media and Malaria Research Network (AMMREN). Dr Binka's dedication to raising awareness on health matters, particularly maternal and child nutrition, has earned her acclaim both locally and internationally.
"Through this training, we hope to empower journalists to effectively communicate the importance of nutrition as a catalyst in improving the health of people,” remarked Dr Binka. "Our goal is to foster a network of media professionals who are well-versed in these critical issues, leading to informed public discourse and, ultimately, positive change."
The curriculum will cover a range of topics, including the impact of malnutrition on communities, sustainable food systems, effective communication strategies, and the latest research in the field of nutrition. Participants can expect interactive sessions, guest lectures from experts, and hands-on workshops designed to hone their reporting skills.
The initiative comes at a crucial time when the continent faces persistent challenges related to malnutrition, food insecurity, and diet-related diseases. By equipping journalists with the knowledge and resources to report accurately and sensitively on these issues, Africa aims to elevate the conversation surrounding nutrition and drive meaningful action.
Journalists selected to participate in the training have expressed enthusiasm for the opportunity to deepen their understanding of nutrition's role in public health.
"I believe this training will not only enhance my reporting skills but also enable me to contribute meaningfully to the discourse on nutrition," shared one participant. "As journalists, we have a responsibility to shed light on these critical issues, and I am eager to learn from experts like Prof. Zotor and Dr Binka."

The training programme underscores a commitment to advancing nutrition education and advocacy across the continent. With a new cadre of informed and empowered journalists, the hope is to drive positive change and improve health outcomes for all Africans.

As the programme gets underway in Ho, the stage is set for a new era of media coverage that places nutrition at the forefront of public discourse. Africa Catalyzing Action for Nutrition, Prof. Zotor, and Dr Binka stand poised to lead the charge towards a healthier, more informed future for the continent.
The training marks a significant milestone in the intersection of journalism, public health, and advocacy, with participants eager to amplify the voices of those affected by nutritional challenges. A similar training has already been organised for 50 youth from the Volta Region.
Africa Catalyzing Action for Nutrition (AfriCAN)
Africa Catalyzing Action for Nutrition (AfriCAN) was born out of this sense of urgency and the belief that political will and action can only be sustained by the people's will and action.
The people’s will and action can only be sustained through communication and education and with adequate and relevant information.
AfriCAN’s Approach
AfriCAN adopts a collaborative approach, which involves working with traditional and nontraditional partners to aid nutrition improvement.
AfriCAN’s approach, therefore, is to inform, educate, advocate, and inspire action at all levels. The goal is for communities to become “Nutrition Literate”, with the knowledge, skills, and will to improve their nutrition situation.
