The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has warned manufacturers, importers and distributors of baby diapers that importation of unregistered, poor quality and unhygienically packaged products will result in their seizure.
It said the safe disposal of the product will be at a cost to the importer.
This comes after the FDA warned that manufacturers, importers and distributors of the product that “baby diapers popularly known as bale diapers, are not permitted into the country.”
It added, "The above notwithstanding, the Authority has noted with great concern, the continuing practice where disposable baby diapers are still imported into the country, either unhygienically packaged in bales or hidden in bales of used clothing.
"These baby diapers are subsequently repackaged and offered for sale without adequate label information or no labelling information at all."
Last Friday, the Authority destroyed 500 bales of substandard baby diapers valued at GH¢3 million, at its recycling plant at Ashiaman, near Tema.

The destruction of the two 40-footer containers of diapers, which were seized from the markets at Kasoa, in the Central Region, Tema in Greater Accra and the Central Business District of Accra, was to ensure the safety of consumers.
The FDA reiterated that "All registered diapers imported into the country must be well-packaged and properly sealed to protect the product from moisture, soiling, contamination and damage during transportation storage and distribution throughout the product’s shelf-life."
