The Spanish government has established a special committee to supervise the country's football federation (RFEF) until new elections are held.
This move comes in the aftermath of the controversy involving the federation's ex-president, Luis Rubiales.
Rubiales was arrested this month amid allegations of corruption and is also facing a separate sexual assault trial for an incident involving Spain player Jenni Hermoso after the Women's World Cup final last summer.
Hermoso has stated that Rubiales kissed her without her consent, a claim he has denied, although he resigned in September 2023.
The National Sports Council (CSD) of Spain stated that the government's intervention aims to address the crisis within the organization and protect the general interest of Spain.
"The Spanish government has taken this action to address the grave situation at the RFEF and to initiate a period of renewal," it added.
The council, which oversees sports in Spain, noted that the oversight committee would consist of "independent persons of recognised prestige."
Both FIFA and UEFA, the global and European football governing bodies respectively, have expressed significant concern and are keeping a close eye on the developments.
