On 15th September 2023, the lives of nearly 39,000 Ghanaians changed forever.
This is because the Volta River Authority (VRA) decided to open the flood gates of the country’s largest hydro dam, the Akosombo dam, citing excess water levels that they claimed threatened the sustainability of the Dam.
Days later, hundreds of communities downstream got flooded. Thousands of livelihoods and homes were destroyed, rendering many homeless.
Six months after that unprecedented excruciating disaster, the victims are yet to be compensated or resettled by the government. JoyNews went back into the community to gauge life after the disaster.
