The President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, has underscored the pivotal role of the media in sculpting the continent's narrative and propelling its progress.
Speaking at the inaugural day of the 3rd African Media Convention hosted at the Labadi Beach Hotel, Mr Dwumfour highlighted the indispensable contributions of journalists in narrating the African story with dedication and authenticity.
“The media wields immense power in shaping perceptions, influencing policies, and driving societal change. As we convene here today, it is imperative to recognise the critical role journalists play in fostering transparency, accountability, and democracy across Africa,” he said.
His words underscored the profound impact of the media in fostering an informed citizenry and holding those in power accountable.
Throughout the convention's proceedings, discussions revolved around pressing issues such as press freedom, media ethics, and technological advancements reshaping the media landscape.
Mr Dwumfour’s impassioned plea for solidarity among African journalists resonated deeply, serving as a rallying call for unity in amplifying the continent's diverse voices and narratives.
The convention, attended by journalists, media professionals, and stakeholders from across Africa, served as a platform for robust discourse and knowledge exchange.
Sessions delved into innovative approaches to storytelling, the challenges facing modern journalism, AI, and the media in Africa, and the evolving role of digital media in shaping public discourse.
Mr Dwumfour's remarks, imbued with a sense of pride in Ghanaian journalism's rich heritage, echoed the collective aspirations of African journalists to continue illuminating the continent's path towards progress and prosperity.
In commemorating the GJA's 75th anniversary and hosting the 3rd African Media Convention, Mr Dwumfour expressed his elation at the opportunity.
He further reaffirmed GJA’s commitment to fostering a vibrant media landscape characterised by integrity, professionalism, and unwavering dedication to the public good.
The Africa Media Convention (AMC) is an annual conference that is a collaborative platform to reflect on the fundamental role of journalism on the continent, celebrate the fundamental principles of press freedom, and deliberate on measures to safeguard media freedoms.
