Former Director of the Ghana School of Law, Kwaku Ansa-Asare, has urged Ghanaians to initiate impeachment proceedings against President Akufo-Addo if he fails to dismiss Attorney General and Minister for Justice Godfred Yeboah-Dame over a leaked tape involving him and Richard Jakpa, a defendant in the ongoing ambulance case.

Mr Ansa-Asare stressed that President Akufo-Addo should have taken action to remove the AG by now if he upholds the principles outlined in the 1992 Constitution of Ghana. 

He asserted that the allegations against the AG are not mere accusations, but serious breaches of the constitution that warrant disciplinary action.

Speaking in an interview with Citi TV on Tuesday, May 28, Ansa-Asare stressed the importance of holding public officials accountable for their actions. 

He insisted that allowing such breaches to go unpunished would undermine the rule of law and erode public trust in the government.

In light of these concerns, Mr Ansa-Asare advised citizens to exercise their constitutional rights and initiate the impeachment process against the President if necessary steps are not taken to address the situation promptly.

“I said the President doesn’t have the moral right nor the political courage to do that. So, Ghanaians must remove him. We’re the people, if we say the President should remove him and he doesn’t, we will impeach the President, for not upholding the tenets of the Constitution.”

“This is not a mere allegation, for once let us stand up and defend the Constitution. He’s my son, I call him my son, I respect him, but that does not mean that if he finds himself in an infraction of the law, then we leave it at that, no.”

Last week, Richard Jakpa alleged that the Attorney-General had encouraged him to provide false testimony against Minority Leader Dr Cassiel Ato Forson in the ongoing ambulance case.

Following Jakpa's claims, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) released a 16-minute recording as evidence to support Jakpa's allegations.

The recording purportedly captures a conversation between Godfred Dame and Jakpa, wherein Dame is alleged to have coached Jakpa on the statements to make in court, targeting Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson.

In a press conference on May 28, NDC Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah asserted that the tape demonstrated a coaching session aimed at influencing Jakpa's court testimony.

However, in response to the NDC's revelations, NPP legal practitioner Frank Davies addressed the press on the same day. 

He argued that the tape contained repetitions, overlaps, and voice distortions, suggesting that the NDC had manipulated the alleged recording they presented.
