Ghana's Theophilus Allotey edged closer to Olympic Games qualification following his win on Thursday, May 3.
Allotey claimed a hard-fought victory over Kyrgyzstan's Anvarzhan Khadzhiev.
The Ghanaian beat his opponent with a tight 4-1 split decision in the flyweight division of the World Olympic Boxing Qualifiers, which is taking place in Bangkok, Thailand.
This victory takes him into the Round of 16, leaving him only two victories away from sealing a spot in Paris 2024. He remains the only male boxer left having taken six to the competition.
In the female category, Ornella Sathoud, competing in the women’s middleweight category, is scheduled to face Aynur Rzayeva from Azerbaijan on Saturday, June 1.
The Bangkok qualifications are Ghana's final chance to qualify boxers for the Games, having failed in previous competitions staged in Senegal and Italy.
In all, there are 51 Olympic slots available at the Bangkok Qualifier. No Ghanaian boxer has qualified for the Olympic Games in Paris yet.
