The Director of Sports at the University of Ghana, Dr Bella Bello Bitugu, says the school is committed to maintaining its stadium to the highest standards.
Following the completion of the facility to host the African Games 2023, there have been concerns about how the stadium will be maintained considering the country's history of poor maintenance of sporting facilities.
"One of the major issues we have in Ghana is maintenance. It’s not just limited to public sporting facilities, but even private property also," Dr. Bitugu remarked, pointing out a widespread challenge that affects various sectors in the country.
Dr. Bitugu drew attention to research that underscores the effectiveness of maintenance when facilities are managed by educational institutions. "One thing, however, proven empirically in the research literature is that sporting facilities are best maintained when they are in educational institutions," he stated.
This research-backed approach is precisely why the University of Ghana is determined to set an example. "This is why the University of Ghana is going to prove to the whole world, and especially Ghanaians, that we have the ability and are competent to maintain this stadium to a level of excellence," Dr. Bitugu asserted.
A comprehensive maintenance plan has been developed to ensure the facility's longevity and functionality. "There is a maintenance concept that has been prepared and I’m sure that we’ll look back on this facility in a few years and be proud of the fantastic work that has been done to maintain it," Dr. Bitugu explained.
The stadium has already hosted many competitions since commissioning on March 1, 2024.
