An Accra High Court on Thursday, June 6, remanded Usman Haruna into police custody. Haruna is accused of stabbing Ato Koomson, the son of Awutu Senya East MP Mavis Hawa Koomson, during a scuffle at the Electoral Commission office at Ofaakor near Kasoa in the Central Region.
The incident occurred on Sunday, June 2, 2024, around 5 am, before the start of the day's activities at the EC office.
Police arrested Haruna amidst the disturbance that led to the stabbing of Mr. Koomson.
The accused is scheduled to reappear in court on June 19, 2024. The court will continue to hear the case and determine the next steps in the legal process.
An eyewitness reported that the clash stemmed from a disagreement over the queuing of voters who were seeking to transfer their votes to the constituency. This disagreement escalated into violence.
During the altercation, Ato Koomson was stabbed in the chest. He was promptly rushed to the 37 Military Hospital in Accra for medical treatment.
Additionally, three members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) were injured during the scuffle. They were admitted to the Kasoa Polyclinic for treatment.
