The Minority in Parliament has emphasised the urgent need for legislation to establish an Independent Police Complaint Commission to address and investigate police misconduct.
Minority Spokesperson on Defence and Interior, James Agalga stated that the police cannot be trusted to investigate their members.
According to him, “the country is lagging so far as the creation of an independent police complaint commission is concerned.”
"How efficient and effective is it to ask the police to investigate their own when allegations of misconduct are made? The best practice, Mr Speaker, is for Parliament to enact legislation to create Independent Police Commissions," Agalga asserted.
This call comes in response to the death of landlord Jerry Kpesenu, who died in police custody following his arrest. His arrest was due to a dispute with a tenant over the installation of an air conditioner, which Kpesenu insisted required his permission.
The Minority also called for the suspension of the police officers allegedly involved in Mr Kpesenu's death.
Also, MP for Keta, Kwame Gakpey, has urged the Keta Divisional Police Command, the Municipal Chief Executive, the Interior Minister, and the Inspector General of Police to expedite the investigation to ensure justice for the bereaved family.
He emphasised, "Justice for Jerry Kpesenu, justice for Keta, justice for Ghana."
