The Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has proposed a 10 per cent quota for members of the various cadet corps in Ghana during recruitment into the various security services.
Ghana has over 1,200 cadet corps across the country, training the youth and inculcating in them the spirit of discipline and volunteerism. However, some fall off without making it into mainstream security agencies.
Addressing a parade to mark the 70th anniversary of the cadet corps in Ghana at the Black Star Square on Monday, July 1, Dr Bawumia said the two percent quota floated by the national cadet corps is not bold enough.
“I hear that last year, you asked for a quarter of 2% of recruitment to be given to the national Cadet Corps. But from what we have seen today, I don't think that is bold enough. I believe we should start with a quota of a minimum of 10%,” he said.
He, therefore, tasked the National Cadet Corps coordinator to collaborate with the Ghana Education Service and the Ministry of Education to prepare a cabinet memo for consideration and approval, enabling the initiative to commence.
The Vice President also expressed confidence in the country's youth in ensuring peace, before, during, and even after the upcoming 2024 general elections.
Dr Bawumia said he is convinced that the youth will exhibit their constitutional right in the upcoming elections to maintain the peace.
"On this day, we are gathered to look at the role the youth of this beautiful country can play in maintaining peace and stability before, during and after the coming election under the theme; “Empowering Ghana’s Youth for Peace and Stability Towards Development ”the Vice President said.
Additionally, he floated the idea for the 1st of July to be set aside every year as a national youth day for the Republic of Ghana since there is no day set aside in Ghana for the youth as is the case in other countries.
