Labour Relations expert, Austin Gamey has advocated for significant changes at the management and board of the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT).
He argues that the current board should be dismantled and replaced with a new team.
Mr Gamey emphasises that a new board would benefit the country, ensuring better management of people’s investments and pension funds.
During an interview on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show on Monday, he stated, “I’m not surprised that UTAG and other people, of course myself, there will have to be some changes to be made at the top echelon of SNNIT and the board itself must be dismantled, not just dissolved, dismantled into pieces and no more to exist.
He elaborated that SSNIT needs to focus on a rigorous study and the enhancement of value in both management and investment.
“Unfortunately, they have not addressed even a fraction of these issues, and therefore, current confidence in them is misplaced,” Mr Gamey noted.
He highlighted that there are committed individuals ready to address the needs of vulnerable people, ensuring they receive adequate pensions upon retirement.
“If you are given a responsibility and fail to meet the expectations of your employer, which in this case is not the government,” he added, "implying that accountability lies elsewhere." Gamey stressed that per the constitutional arrangement, the president appoints the board and top pension officials. While this is the current setup, he believes it needs to change.
“In the future, board members should be those with the expertise to ensure that investment decisions, strategic pension plans, and their execution are handled effectively,” he concluded.
