The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) says it has no intention of staging a coup or engaging in activities which could jeopardise the peace of the nation as alleged by the Executive Director of the Institute of Democratic Governance, Dr Emmanuel Akwetey.
This follows a Ghanaweb publication dated August 22, which reports that Dr Akwetey said Ghana's democracy is under threat if concerns of the pending election turning violent are not addressed.
According to the publication, Dr Akwetey had alleged that the Ghana Armed Forces is ready to intervene should the elections in the country turn violent beyond the control of the Ghana Police Service.
However, in a rejoinder signed by the Public Relations Department, Brigadier General Aggrey-Quarshie refuted the claims insisting that GAF has no intention of staging a coup and has not held any meeting to that effect.
“The allegation by Dr Akwetey, cannot be true because the Ghana Armed Forces has not held any press conference at which it declared its intention to take over the country. We wish to make it clear that GAF has no intention to stage a coup and will prevent and resist any individual, group or organisation seeking to take over unlawfully the power of government either acting alone or in collaboration with any security agency,” the release said.
The security services said it was committed to maintaining the country's democracy and would ensure that it assists the police in maintaining law and order when requested.

GAF appealed to civil society groups and the media to refrain from using it name to highten political tension in the country.
“We wish to urge all stakeholders to join hands in ensuring that all citizens feel free and safe to undertake their lawful activities in an atmosphere of tranquility," portions of the release read.
Again, GAF reaffirmed its commitment to preserving Ghana's democracy.
"GAF, like all peace-loving institutions and individuals, is looking forward to peaceful elections come December 2024. We therefore call on all institutions and groups not to associate GAF with anything that has the potential of heightening political tension in the country," the release added.
