The Ghana Police Service in Accra is investigating the vandalisation of monument in honour of the Big Six at the Airport Roundabout.
Significant damage has been done to the effigies of the six men who led Ghana’s fight for independence from British colonial rule in the late 1940s.
The investigation follows the arrest of a man on Saturday, August 31, for vandalising the monuments.
Videos posted on social media show the man actively damaging the effigies of the six leaders representing Ghana’s independence movement.
In a statement, the police said the suspect, identified as Newwel Gavu, is currently in custody and will be processed according to the law.
“We would like to commend members of the public and the Airport security for their vigilance which led to the arrest of the suspect,” the statement read.
Speaking to JoyNews on Sunday, September 1, some residents expressed shock and confusion over the incident.
One resident remarked, "This serves as a monumental thing for all Ghanaians so I think it’s a bad thing to do. You could read a lot of meaning into this. No one in their right mind should do such a thing."
Additionally, a resident reported that one of the damaged effigies was removed by men dressed in police uniforms just hours after the incident.
“That was in the afternoon, I was here - I was looking at them so they carried the sculpture into the car. They were five people carrying it inside the car,” he said.
