The 2020 Presidential Candidate for the Progressive People's Party (PPP), Brigitte Dzogbenuku has stated that political leadership in Ghana is now centred on a person's financial standing.
According to her, individuals with significant wealth often rise to leadership positions.
However, she emphasised that leadership should not be determined by a person's wealth or financial status.
Speaking on JoyNews' AM Show, Madam Dzogbenuku said there was a need for all political parties to be given equal attention, regardless of their financial resources.
In response to her perception of Nana Kwame Bediako, the leader of the political movement The New Force, she said, "Leadership is not simply about wealth or being rich. Have we not heard all of these before? Have we not heard countless promises? Let’s see what happens if he wins, but with all of them, it’s the same—just promises.
“I mean, I would say, have you heard Alan Kyerematen? Why not? Why haven’t we given him more consideration, just as we are considering all these other people outside the two major parties? But most of us would say it would be a wasted vote. So, we go back and vote for the two main parties just because we don’t want our vote to be wasted."
She stated that Ghanaians need to break away from the dominance of the two major parties, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP), as both have upheld the status quo without offering any real change.
"We have said time and time again in the PPP that we need a constitutional review, but they don’t seem to want to do that."
