Democracy Hub, the organisers of the three-day #ReoccupyJulorbiHouse and #StopGalamseyNow demonstrations, have expressed outrage over the arrest of one Benjamin Akufo Darko by the Ghana Police Service.
According to the group, despite Darko’s absence from the recent protests due to personal commitments, the police arrested him.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, September 25, the pressure group explained that although Darko did not attend the protests, he was providing support by coordinating assistance and raising funds for those already detained.
“His arrest is a deliberate violation of human rights, designed to further intimidate and torture those who dare to speak out.
“This escalation shows a blatant disregard for justice and freedom of expression. Targeting those who work behind the scenes to offer support is an attempt to break the spirit of peaceful protest and silence all forms of dissent,” part of the statement read.
Democracy Hub called for the immediate release of Benjamin Akufo Darko and all others unlawfully detained.
They also demanded an end to the state-sanctioned harassment of activists and citizens exercising their rights.
“We urge the Ghana Police Service to remember their duty to protect, not persecute, citizens who seek a better and brighter future for Ghana. And we remind the government that the will of the people cannot be suppressed.
“Our movement for justice, accountability, and environmental preservation will only grow stronger in the face of such attempts to silence us. We stand united for our country, for our democracy, and for our future,” the group added.
