Rapper Gambo, known for his hit song Drip, recently visited the studios of Voice of America (VOA) in Washington D.C., where he sat down with reporter Mike Hove to discuss his ongoing tour in the U.S. and his experiences pursuing the "American dream."
The rapper, who has been on tour for months, shared insights into his time in the U.S., highlighting key moments in his career.
Gambo recalled his memorable meeting with hip-hop legend Snoop Dogg in February 2024, which took place in Los Angeles during the African pre-Grammy Awards Global Affairs event.
Reflecting on the encounter, Gambo said, "Snoop Dogg has a warm personality; he makes you feel like you know him, and he doesn't give you the chance to be nervous."
In addition to his interactions with international stars, Gambo revealed that he is currently working on an Afrobeats album.
He also spoke about the success of his Drip Remix featuring American rapper Jim Jones, which highlighted African culture.
Gambo took the opportunity to recognise the pioneers of Afrobeats, crediting them with paving the way for younger artists like himself.
He noted the global excitement surrounding the genre, saying, "Afrobeats is at the stage where everybody is excited for it. It's vibrant, and people are ready to dance with it. Afrobeats makes you happy."
Touching on the importance of collaboration among African artists, Gambo emphasised the need for unity in promoting African music and culture on the global stage.
“This is the time we need to push, support each other, and push our culture to the world,” he urged.
Gambo also reflected on his various collaborations, calling his work with Nigerian artist Goya Menor on the track Cut Soap his biggest African collaboration so far.
He also mentioned his successful collaborations with Nigerian singer Lade on Nobody and Tanzanian artist Young Daresalama on Sio Simple.
Before concluding the interview, Gambo acknowledged actor and comedian Michael Blackson for his support in connecting him with influential figures in the US music industry, including Jim Jones, which has contributed to his growing international presence.
