Managing Director of AngloGold Ashanti, Obuasi Mine, Samuel Boakye Pobee was adjudged the 2023 Mining Personality of the year at the 10th Mining Industry Awards (GMIA) held in Accra.
This prestigious accolade is reserved for exceptional professionals of the rank of General Manager or equivalent, and Executive office holders who played a significant role in the growth of the mining industry in 2023.
Mr. Pobee was recognized for his invaluable contributions to the mining industry. Spanning over twenty decades of his career, he has demonstrated excellence and dedication to enhancing operational efficiency and promoting sustainable practices in mining.

Similarly, he received the CEO of the year in 2022 (Private Sector) award in recognition of his outstanding leadership abilities, strategic decision-making, and significant contributions to socio-economic development.
His strategic introduction of several innovative programmes to shape the company’s performance, especially in safety, environmental management and human capital development made him the best candidate to be conferred the enviable title.
His visionary and transformational leadership at AngloGold Ashanti, Iduapriem Mine before moving to the Obuasi Mine, did not only raise the profile of the Mine but set the benchmark for other mines under the AngloGold Ashanti brand.
Under his leadership, Iduapriem Mine chalked record levels of production while strengthening its environmental stewardship and being recognized as one of the most diverse and inclusive in the industry.
Mr. Pobee served as the General Manager – Technical Services for Resolute Mining in Australia, and appointed General Manager – Operations, and later the interim Managing Director for Barrick Gold (formerly Acacia Mining) in Tanzania.
He returned to Ghana to occupy the Managing Directorship of AngloGold Ashanti Iduapriem Ltd in July 2021, and now the Obuasi Mine.
Mr. Pobee’s impactful career journey exemplifies his distinction as Mining Personality of the Year.
In his remarks after receiving his award, Mr. Pobee said the award symbolizes teamwork, hard work and dedicated leadership.
He commended the Iduapriem team for their unwavering support during his tenure as Managing Director.
“This recognition is a testament to the incredible dedication, hard work, and innovation of every single member of our team at Iduaprem. Thank you for your unwavering commitment to excellence, and to the team at the Obuasi Mine, let's continue to strive for even greater achievements together," he said.
Mr. Samuel Pobee holds a Master’s degree in Business Administration from INSEAD Business School, a post-graduate certificate in Applied Finance from Macquarie University, Australia, and a diploma in Mining Engineering from the University of Mines and Technology, Ghana.
He also holds a Master’s degree in Geostatistics from the University of Adelaide, Australia.
