The Ghana National Canoe Fishermen Council (GNCFC), Southern Volta Marine, has expressed its heartfelt congratulations to John Mahama on his election as President-elect of Ghana.
The Council, representing canoe fishermen in the Southern Volta Marine region, has pledged its commitment to working closely with the newly elected administration to advance the fishing industry and enhance the lives of those who depend on it.
In a statement issued on Thursday, December 12, the GNCFC lauded Mr Mahama’s victory, describing it as well-deserved and filled with promise for Ghana's fishing communities.
The council highlighted its eagerness to collaborate with President Mahama to promote sustainable fishing practices, improve the livelihoods of its members, and contribute to the broader development of the fisheries sector.
They expressed optimism that his leadership would be pivotal in addressing the numerous challenges faced by fishing communities across the nation.
"We believe that your leadership and vision for our great nation will be instrumental in addressing the challenges facing our fishing communities.
"We look forward to working with you to create a brighter future for our members and the entire fishing industry," part of the statement read.
Fishing communities in Ghana face a range of issues, including depleting fish stocks, competition from industrial trawlers, and the lack of adequate infrastructure to support artisanal fishing.
The GNCFC sees President Mahama’s tenure as an opportunity to prioritise these issues and create a roadmap for sustainable growth.
The council expressed confidence in the President’s ability to lead initiatives that would not only safeguard marine resources but also empower local fishermen to thrive.
They are particularly hopeful about new policies and projects that will invest in infrastructure, provide better access to markets, and promote education on sustainable fishing practices.
“We look forward to working with you to create a brighter future for our members and the entire fishing industry,” the Council emphasised.
The GNCFC concluded by wishing President Mahama wisdom, strength, and success as he embarks on his leadership journey, expressing their readiness to support his efforts in advancing the fishing sector.
