The Coalition of Domestic Election Observers (CODEO) has called for a rerun of the parliamentary elections in the Dome Kwabenya and Ablekuma North constituencies.
Nearly 20 days after the December 7 polls, the results for these two constituencies remain unresolved, with the Electoral Commission (EC) yet to make a final declaration.
The delay stems from the EC’s decision to annul the initial results, citing the need to reconcile missing pink sheets from 37 polling stations.
During an emergency Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting on Tuesday, the EC sought assistance from political parties to provide copies of the missing pink sheets to facilitate the process.
Albert Arhin, National Coordinator of CODEO, highlighted the challenges during an interview on Joy FM. He noted that in some cases, EC officials fled polling stations due to unrest, potentially leading to the loss of crucial election materials.
He added that although the EC officials are supposed to have their pink sheets, it is possible that they may lose them due to pandemonium or attacks.
"...So what might happen is that if the EC gets to a point where they might not be able to get anything and the two parties are also not agreeing, then probably they have to be a rerun for these constituencies,” he said.
He further emphasised the importance of resolving the situation promptly to uphold the integrity of the electoral process.
EC has however assured constituents of Ablekuma North and Dome Kwabenya that they would have their Members of Parliament-elect declared before the inauguration in January 2025.
