A land governance advisor has called on Ghanaians to protect state property and official documents during the ongoing political transition to ensure a smooth transfer of power.
Dr Gad Asorwoe Akwensivie, speaking to journalists on Christmas Day, December 25, 2024, at the University of Ghana, Legon, raised concerns over the alarming incidents of damage to government property during transitional periods.
He highlighted several recent cases, including the arrest of four individuals for removing materials from the Agenda-111 Hospital site at Awutu Bereku in the Central Region, vandalism of state vehicles at Parliament House, and the destruction of the Electoral Commission office and District Chief Executive's residence at Damongo in the North East Region.
Other incidents cited were the removal of items from the School Feeding Project warehouse in Tamale and the December 24 fire at the Saglemi Housing Project site, which destroyed valuable property in its storage area.
Dr. Akwensivie urged law enforcement agencies, private security providers, and the public, particularly public officers, to exercise heightened vigilance during and after the transition period.
He advised government institutions to procure fire extinguishers, install smoke detectors, and ensure staff are trained to handle fire emergencies.
"It behoves us as citizens to protect state property," Dr Akwensivie emphasised, appealing to all Ghanaians to play their part in preserving public assets.
