The Finance Minister-designate, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, has outlined his strategy for debt sustainability when approved as minister.
According to him, the country's debt management in previous years has been a major concern.
“It is sad to note that the country has gone through a very difficult debt exchange domestically. It is also sad to note that we had to restructure our Europe bonds,” he said.
Speaking during his vetting before the Appointments Committee of Parliament, Dr Forson outlined intended strategies to avoid repeating the mistakes of the past.
He revealed that the current government plans to establish an independent debt management office.
He emphasized that it is his duty to ensure that past mistakes are not repeated, and promised to remain committed to work in preventing the crises faced in previous years.
Dr Cassiel Ato Forson assured former President Nana Akufo-Addo and the people of Ghana that the country will not default on its debt obligations under his leadership.

“It is our responsibility to make sure we pay, and the Ministry of Finance, I believe, at this time, is preparing to do the payment. My responsibility is to make sure what has happened in the past does not repeat, and so I will do just that. I will work with the Ministry of Finance, I will work with our development partners, and we will do whatever it takes to avoid a second wave of the crisis we faced in 2022. That, I can assure you,” he explained.
