President John Mahama has made a critical visit to the heads of all state security agencies in Bawku to mediate tensions in the area.
According to him, rampant chieftaincy disputes continue to arise whenever a chief passes on.
“After December 7, the issue of chieftaincy disputes has become a major issue any time a chief passes away and a new chief has to be selected. Invariably, two rival chiefs or three rival chiefs suddenly appear,” he noted.
Addressing the state security agencies, he mentioned that it was the government’s decision not to interfere in chieftaincy matters and to withdraw from issues related to it.
However, he emphasised the need to engage with security agencies to devise measures to prevent possible chieftaincy conflicts in the area.
“So I think that we must work with you to see how we can prevent this from happening,” he stated.
“I remember that the point was made that there should be a codification of the lines of succession. I don’t know how far that project has gone,” he added.
The peace mission reflects the President’s broader vision for a united Ghana, where disputes are addressed through diplomacy and mutual understanding.
