The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has reaffirmed his determination to see the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, popularly referred to as the anti-LGBTQ Bill, passed into law this year.
Speaking to traditional leaders and National Democratic Congress (NDC) supporters on 26th January 2025, Speaker Bagbin emphasised his unwavering dedication to preserving Ghana’s cultural and moral values.
He expressed his willingness to make personal sacrifices for the cause, declaring, “I am prepared to lose my life for this cause.”
Bagbin also disclosed plans to formally consult the Minister for Justice and Attorney General for advice on advancing the bill, which is believed to have expired at the end of the 8th Parliament in 2024.
He criticised the previous administration for its handling of the legislation, noting that while the bill had been approved by Parliament, and ought to have been assented to by the former president.
“Parliament passed the LGBTQ bill, but the former president’s refusal to sign it into law was unconstitutional. Parliament, not the president, holds the authority to pass laws. That decision was a misstep, and the people rightly held him accountable,” Speaker Bagbin asserted.
He assured the public that the current bill would not face similar setbacks, promising swift action to secure its passage and presidential endorsement.
“This bill will be enacted this year. It [Homosexuality] is ungodly, and I will not tolerate any jokes on this matter,” he declared.
